Ottoman Turkish troops begin their siege of Nicosia on Cyprus. Turkish forces commanded by Kara Mustafa landed on Cyprus on orders from Selim II, Ottoman sultan, with the goal of reconquering the island.

Most of the island falls relatively quickly and thousands are massacred. When Nicosia surrenders in September, the entire city population is killed.

Only Famagusta, ruled by governor Marco Antonio Bragadin from Venice, holds out for about a year.
