Ulrich Zwingli and some humanist friends sign a joint letter to the bishop of the diocese of Constance, demanding an end to the requirement that priests be celibate.

Zwingli quotes the Bible as justification for marriage for everyone and argues that celibacy creates too many evils to tolerate.

Zwingli himself has already secretly married a widow, Anna Reinhard, earlier this year.
