Byzantine emperor Manuel II Palaeologus dies. Shortly before dying, Manuel was forced by the Ottoman Turks to begin paying them a yearly tribute.

It's a humiliating treaty, but it's the only way Manuel II has of staving off a full-scale assault against Constantinople. There simply isn't enough left of the Byzantine Empire today to work with.
