Rintfleisch Massacres: The Jewish community of Würzburg, Germany is destroyed by mobs of Christians.

The Rintfleisch Massacres began in Röttingen, where Jews were accused of desecrating a consecrated host. A "Lord Rintfleisch" claimed to have received instructions from God to avenge the sacrilege and eliminate the Jews.

The Jews of Röttingen were the first to be exterminated by the Christian mob on April 20, 1298. The pogrom then expanded to nearby German cities: Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Würzburg, Nördlingen, Nuremberg, and Bamberg.

In all, at least 5,000 Jews in 146 German and Austrian communities will be slaughtered between April and late August 1298.
