St. Clare of Assisi is born.

Clare will be deeply influenced by the work and teachings of St. Francis of Assisi — so much so, in fact, that she eventually chooses a spiritual life rather than the marriage her parents have arranged for her and founds the Order of Poor Ladies (Order of Saint Clare, Poor Clares) religious order.

The Rule of Life created by Clare for the Order of Poor Ladies is the first known monastic rule created by a woman for women. After her death, the Order of Poor Ladies will be renamed Order of Saint Clare in her honor.
