Alfonso I Henriques of Portugal is proclaimed King of the Portuguese by his soldiers following his victory in the Battle of Ourique. The Portugese defeated the Almoravid Moors led by Ali ibn Yusuf despite being heavily outnumbered.

This makes Alfonso the first king of Portugal, though real independence from Alfonso VII of Leon (his cousin) and the Spanish territories will take quite a bit more time and political maneuvering to accomplish.

From the perspective of Alfonso VII of Leon, Alfonso I Henriques of Portugal is little more than a rebel — they may be cousins, but the conflict between the two is bitter, even though they both also have to deal with Muslim invaders from the south at the same time.
