Alfonso VI of Leon and Castile dies in Toledo. Alfonso VI was known for being a major leader in the Reconquista and for his success in expanding Christian territory at the expense of Muslim rulers.

Nevertheless, he did not reject Arab Muslim influences and culture out of hand. Muslims who found themselves living in his domains were protected rather than persecuted, and some of the coins struck during his rule had Arabic lettering on them.
