Political History

El Cid (Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar — El Cid Campeador, "The lord-master of military arts") dies during the Muslim siege of Valencia.

The city has been both Christian and Muslim because adherents of both religions serve in El Cid's army on an equal basis. It's an early version of interfaith tolerance in Europe, based on military conquest.
