Damasus II is installed as pope. Born Poppo in Bavaria, Damasus II is the third German to become pope and the second German nominated to the papacy by Holy Roman Emperor Henry III.

The reign Pope Damasus II will be one of the shortest on record — just 24 days. It's so short, in fact, that there will be rumors that he is poisoned; it is more likely, however, that he dies of malaria.

Damasus had previously been the bishop of Brixen and after being raised to bishop of Rome and pope he retained his diocese at Brixen — just the second pope in history to do so.
