Pope Leo IV dies. When he was elected, Leo IV had to immediately deal with Muslim incursions into Italy. Everyone had been interpreting the military success of the Muslim raiders as a sign of God's displeasure with Christian institutions, and Pope Leo IV had a difficult task in restoring their confidence.

Pope Leo IV organized efforts to protect Rome from destruction. One of the most important elements of this is the construction of a 40-foot high wall surrounding St. Peter's and much of the Vatican, which will become known as the "Leonine City."

Pope Leo IV also organizes a military alliance among Greek and Italian cities to go on the offensive and drive the Muslim raiders out of Italy. The naval league formed by the cities was victorious at the Battle of Ostia.
