Pope Celestine I dies. A staunch defender of Catholic orthodoxy, Pope Celestine I presided over the Council of Ephesus, which condemned the teachings of the Nestorians as heretical, and he pursued the followers of Pelagius as well. He is said to have opposed even the smallest deviation from or innovation in the Christian liturgy.

Celestine is the pope who sent St. Patrick on his evangelistic mission to Ireland.
