Sikh extremists (All-India Sikh Students Federation) take control of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the holiest Sikh shrine. They procede to dismantle the Akal Takht, the holy seat of authority in the Temple, because they think that moderate Sikhs had compromised too much in cooperating with the government and that the reconstruction of the Temple after the last takeover in 1984 had become sacrilegious.

Government forces are not able to retake the Temple until April 30 when commandos storm the compound.
