Pope Pius X meets with Theodore Herzl, founder of the Zionist movement. Herzl requests papal support for the creation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine, but he refuses.

Pope Pius X explains:

"We won't be able to stop the Jews from going to Jerusalem, but we could never favor it. ...

The Jews have not recognized our Lord, and so we cannot recognize the Jewish people. ...

[T]he Jewish faith was the foundation of our own, but it has been superseded by the teachings of Christ, and we cannot admit that it still enjoys any validity. ...

[I]f you come to Palestine and settle your people there, we will be ready with churches and priests to baptize all of you."

It will be more than 90 years before the Vatican formally recognizes the state of Israel - and even then they will continue to object to Israeli control over Jerusalem.
