Pope Pius IV officially ratifies the decrees and definitions created by the Council of Trent by issuing the papal bull Benedictus Deus.

In this bull, Pius IV demands strict obedience from all Catholics to the decisions of the Catholic hierarchy, forbids unauthorized interpretations of doctrine or scripture (on pain of excommunication), and threatens disobedience with "the indignation of Almighty God and of his blessed apostles, Peter and Paul."
