Born to a Quaker family that immigrated to the United States from Britain, Elizabeth Blackwell becomes the first woman (or at least the first woman who openly identifies as being female) to graduate from medical school in the United States and become a medical physician.

Blackwell is awarded her M.D. by the Geneva Medical College of Geneva, New York.
