Crystal Eastman, Roger Baldwin and Walter Nelles create the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) as a successor to the National Civil Liberties Bureau (NCLB), an organization founded in World War I by the American Union Against Militarism (AUAM) to protect the rights of conscientious objectors.

This new ACLU has the mission to protect the civil rights of all Americans against government intrusion.
