After a ten year suspension, the Council of Trent reconvenes under Pope Pius IV. This will be the last session of the Council of Trent and they bishops meet regularly between now and December 1563.

By this point, the Jesuits (Society of Jesus) have become a driving force within the Catholic leadership. They are demanding rigorous adherence to Catholic tradition and purity of doctrinal obedience.

During the earlier sessions there were active efforts to find points of compromise and there were expectations that, sooner or later, Protestants would be brought back into the Catholic Church. None of that is true now and all hope of reconciliation has evaporated.
