Theodosius I the Great, the Spanish-born emperor of Rome, dies in Milan at age 49. Theodosius was the last Roman emperor to rule over both the eastern and the western halves of the Roman Empire. After his death, the Roman Empire is permanently split between his two sons: Arcadius in the east and Honorius in the west. In the Orthodox Church, his is recognized as Saint Theodosius because he established Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire and persecuted the pagans.
