Political History

Adolf Hitler officially moves into the Führerbunker. Built between 1936 and 1943, the bunker complex under the Reich Chancellery started out as a temporary air raid shelter and was later transformed into something capable of serving as a permanent residence, safe from the increased bombing of Berlin.

When Adolf Hitler moves into the Führerbunker on this date, it becomes his final home as well as the center of German government. Sections of the bunker remain into the 21st century, though they will be sealed off from the public.
