Adrian VI is elected pope. Born Adriaan Florenszoon Boeyens, Adrian VI will be the last non-Italian Pope until the election of John Paul II, 455 years later.

Adrian is also one of only two modern popes to retain the name they were baptized with rather than adopt a new name upon assuming the office of pope.
