Pope Celestine III dies in Rome. Born Giacinto Bobone, Celestine III came into frequent conflict with European monarchs. He excommunicated Emperor Henry VI for keeping Richard I of England (1189-99) in prison, condemned Alfonso IX's marriage to Teresa of Portugal, then excommunicated Alfonso IX for making peace with Muslims while pursuing war against Castile.

Celestine III also confirmed the statutes of the Teutonic Knights as a Christian military order.
