William Hubbs Rehnquist is sworn in as an Associate Supreme Court Justice. Rehnquist is a staunch political and legal conservative who has made a name for himself working on behalf of white Republican political candidates by challenging the right of black citizens to vote. His challenges included imposing literacy tests on black citizens who sought to cast votes in Arizona elections.
