The U.S. Congress grants a charter to the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation of the District of Columbia to construct a cathedral in Washington, D.C. This will become the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, informally known as the Washington National Cathedral.

This Episcopal cathedral is the 6th largest cathedral in the world.
