Benito Mussolini becomes dictator in Italy. Although Benito Mussolini has for a while been working to undermine Italian democracy, it is on this date that the mask drops and he moves openly.

Socialists, liberals, and others had been agitating against the violence being committed by fascist Blackshirts and more militarist elements within the fascist movement demanded that Mussolini either do something about the agitators or they would move without him.

So Mussolini addresses the Chamber of Deputies taking personal responsibility for violence of the Blackshirts and promising a crackdown on protests.
