Martin Luther is officially excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church. Luther had already been warned that this would happen if he didn't recant 41 statements from his various writings, including the 97 Theses.

Martin Luther not only refused to comply and refused to consider any compromise, but he publicly burned the papal bull in which the demands were made.

Pope Leo X thus issues the bull excommunicating Luther, Decet Romanum Pontificem, on this date.
