Nicholas II is elected pope. Born G rard de Bourgogne, he is currently Bishop of Florence. A primary focus of his reign will be reforming how popes are elected and one of the biggest changes he introduces is restricting the vote to only cardinals.

This denies any direct voice over papal elections to both secular rulers and the people of Rome. It also helps establish the preeminence and power of cardinals in the church.
