Johann Joseph Ignaz von Döllinger, a founder of the Old Catholic movement, is born. A Catholic priest, theologian, and church historian, Döllinger's views on religious matters will be diverse enough to resist pigeonholing him as "liberal" or "conservative."

Döllinger does, however, develop very negative views on the issue of papal infallibility. Döllinger becomes convinced that the doctrine contradicts a millennium of church traditions, teachings, and beliefs, as well as scripture itself.
