Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser seizes power in Egypt after kidnapping Muhammad Naguib, a popular general who assumed the office of president after the revolution that overthrew the monarchy in 1952.

Muhammad Naguib is very popular with the people, however, and pressure from the public leads to pressure from the Revolutionary Command Council to reinstate Naguib. Nasser will reluctantly agree, but an assassination attempt on him later this year gives him the ability to impose a massive political crackdown, removing Naguib once and for all.
