On his twentieth birthday, Charles V is crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire by Pope Leo X, becoming the last emperor crowned by a pope.

Next year, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V will the Diet of Worms to deal with the strife being created by Martin Luther and his reformist followers. Because of the tight connection between religion and politics in Europe, religious dissent creates political dissent and Charles V will not tolerate that. When Martin Luther refuses to recant his ideas he will be declared an "outlaw," which means that he was no longer under the protection of the laws of the empire. Anyone will e able rob or kill him without fear of legal retribution.
