Holy Roman Emperor Charles V is born. During his reign from 1519 to 1556, he will officially pronounce Martin Luther an outlaw and heretic.

In 1521 Holy Roman Emperor Charles V calls the Diet of Worms to deal with the strife being created by Martin Luther and his reformist followers. Because of the tight connection between religion and politics in Europe, religious dissent creates political dissent and Charles V will not tolerate that.
