John Rawls is born in Baltimore, Maryland. An American political philosopher, John Rawls will create a version of the social contract theory that relies on the concept of justice being equivalent to fairness.

According to Rawls, the best way to balance competing freedoms and rights while also limiting inequality in a society is for people to imagine that they they are setting up the rules from behind a "veil of ignorance."

What this principle means is that, when setting up social rules, people have no idea who or what they will be when they enter society. They might end up belonging to any class, race, etc. In this way, people have a vested interest in creating rules that will be equally beneficial and least harmful to all.
