Hindu reformer and theologian Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa is born Gadadhar Chattopadhyaya. Ramakrishna will become a key figure in what will be known as the Hindu renaissance of the 19th century.

Eager to learn about religion even while still very young, Ramakrishna will exert a great deal of influence one people around him. Over time he will bring together a group of well-educated disciples. Those disciples see him as a living incarnation of their ancient religious traditions and as a sign of how those traditions could acquire the vitality necessary for modern life. A few of his disciples will even come to believe that Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa is the most recent avatar of God.
