Iran's Revolutionary Guard renews a death sentence against author Salman Rushdie over his novel The Satanic Verses. The fatwa was originally issued by the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Salman Rushdie has written numerous books, but his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses is what's drawn the most attention to him. Inspired in part by the life of Muhammad, The Satanic Verses is banned in numerous Muslim nations and Rushdie is forced to live in hiding.
