Friedrich Schleiermacher dies in Berlin, Germany. Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher was a German philosopher and theologian who, in his theories on the nature of religion, argued that religious faith is more about emotions than reason.

According to Schleiermacher: "Religion's essence is neither thinking nor acting but intuition and feeling." Schleiermacher also argued that faith is largely based on feelings of absolute dependency and that our ideas of the existence of God derive from these feelings.
