Cotton Mather is born in Boston, Massachusetts. A Puritan minister, Cotton Mather's prolific writing will make him one of the most influential religious leaders in the American colonies.

Unfortunately that influence will including promoting belief in witches and his 1688 book Remarkable Providences will help encourage the start of the Salem Witch Trials. In later years Cotton Mather will be completely unrepentant about what happened in Salem, even to the point of arguing in favor of using "spectral evidence" at trials of witches.
