Iraqi Premier Abd al-Karim Qasim is executed by firing squad by the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party (ASBP). Qasim was an Iraqi general who too power in the July 14, 1958 coup which overthrew the Iraqi monarchy. Unfortunately the Free Officers behind the coup lacked any sort of coherent ideology or united vision to keep them together, leading to constant dissent and power struggles in the government.

The overthrow of Abd al-Karim Qasim is accomplished by another group made up from people both in the military and the private sector but which does have a coherent ideology: the Ba'ath Party.
