Josef Cardinal Mindszenty, Catholic prelate in Hungary, is sentenced to life imprisonment for "treason" and "espionage." Mindszenty will be freed during the Hungarian revolution of 1956, but when the Soviet Union invades to restore control Mindszenty gets asylum in the American embassy. He remains there, a virtual prisoner, until 1971.
