Pope Clement XII dies. One of the oldest men ever to be named pope, Clement XII has a lot of experience and comes from one of the richest families of Florence.

One of the important acts of Pope Clement XII was to restore the papal finances to a more healthy state. Under his predecessor various cardinals had squandered and stolen large amounts of money. They were now fined and, in some cases, imprisoned. The influx of funds allowed Clement XII to engage in numerous building projects.
