The Vatican releases an 88-page document about New Age spiritualities and alternative religions. Although it does not condemn such movements, "Jesus Christ, the Bearer of the Water of Life: A Christian Reflection on the 'New Age'" does argue that Catholics should be very careful with them because they are "difficult to reconcile with Christian doctrine and spirituality."

This document is a joint creation of four Vatican offices: the Pontifical Council for Culture, the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith also had input on the final text because doctrinal issues are addressed.
