Manonia Evans and Donna Burkett are married in a ceremony conducted by Rev. Joseph Feldhausen, an Orthodox priest who is himself gay.
Feldhausen said a couple of months ago in an interview in Jet magazine that the social problems facing gay people are much like those facing other minorities:
"The whole gay liberation movement in America is a lot like the Black liberation movement. Where you are defined by society and where they are at in their thinking.
The whole gay thing fits right into the oppressed people's bag with the church. The Orthodox church is supposed to be one where oppressed people can come and worship in peace. And that is why the wedding will be performed by me."
Unfortunately, Feldhausen has experienced problems in his church over the issue of homosexuality:
"You see, I am gay myself and when I told my congregation that a year ago, we went from 80 parishioners to 15, and those 15 are gay.
So our church is gay. The other churches in Milwaukee have chosen not to relate to us. They have damned us with silence."
