Paul Ryan: Rape is Just Another Form of Conception

Paul Ryan

Paul Ryan, the Republican nominee for Vice-President, says that rape is just another method of conception and thus not a legitimate reason to allow a woman to have an abortion. Women who become pregnant from rape should be forced by the government to give birth.

"I'm very proud of my pro-life record, and I've always adopted the idea that, the position that the method of conception doesn't change the definition of life. But let's remember, I'm joining the Romney-Ryan ticket. And the president makes policy."

This statement was made in an interview with WJHL after Ryan was asked about his opinion on the assertion by Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) that women cannot get pregnant from "legitimate rape."

Paul Ryan does not differentiate between pregnancies resulting from consensual sex and pregnancies resulting from rape — both are equally forms of "conception" in his eyes.

This is in fact the only logical conclusion of the extreme anti-choice view of Christian conservatives who say that abortion is murder. If the fetus is a person and the moral equivalent of an adult, then abortion is murder regardless of how the fetus was conceived.

This is a position adopted, implicitly or explicitly, by nearly all Republicans and it is expressed unequivocally by the Republican Party platform. Not many, though, are willing to say it directly and aloud in public.
