The California Supreme Court rules that Mayor Gavin Newsom didn't have the authority to ignore current state law regarding same-sex marriage when he instructed the city-county clerk in February to start issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

As a consequence, the court nullifies all of the marriages which had been performed for same-sex couples of the course of February and early March, 2004 — about 4,000.

Chief Justice Ronald George writes for the court:

"Our decision in this case is not intended, and should not be interpreted, to reflect any view on that issue."
