Rais Massacre: Muslim terrorists from the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) attack innocent civilians near the Algerian village of Rais. The death toll is uncertain, but estimates range from 98 to as many as 800.

Rais has a history of supporting Islamic guerrillas and political groups, but it's reported that they recently stopped supplying the groups with food and money. Thus the motive for this attack may simply be revenge, though it is one of the worst massacres in Algeria during the 1990s.
