Stephen G. Breyer is sworn in as a Supreme Court justice. This is a private ceremony at the Vermont summer home of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist with Joanna Breyer as the only witness.

The public swearing-in ceremony will take place next week a the White House, but as of today Stephen Breyer is officially on the Supreme Court and can begin his duties.

He had originally been considered for the position left vacant by Byron White in 1993, but President Bill Clinton chose Ruth Bader Ginsburg at that time.

With the retirement of Harry Blackmun in 1994, Clinton has another vacancy to fill and this time chose Breyer who was confirmed by the Senate 87-9.
