Marxist philosopher Ernst Bloch dies in Tübingen, Germany, at the age of 92. In his work, Bloch emphasized the role of hope as an important human drive. This work became very influential during the student protest movements in 1968 as well as Catholic liberation theology.

It was in America, where he went to flee the Nazis, that Ernst Bloch wrote two of the three volumes in his principal work, Das Prinzip Hoffnung (The Principle of Hope).
