The American Lutheran Church is officially organized from a merger of the German Iowa Synod, Buffalo Synod, and the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Ohio.

After 1960, this American Lutheran Church will often be referred to as the "old American Lutheran Church." That will distinguish it from another American Lutheran Church formed in 1960 from the old American Lutheran Church as well as other Lutheran churches.
