Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith are lynched by a mob of white men in Marion, Indiana. This is the last confirmed lynching of blacks in the United States.

Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith had been arrested and charged with robbing a white factory worker and raping his white girlfriend. The white mob breaks into the jail, beats the two men, and hangs them. Police officers are in the crowd and cooperate the entire time.

The accompanying photograph here was taken by studio photographer Lawrence Beitler who will sell thousands of copies of the image. A witness will tell an interviewer that the two men had indeed tried to rob a white man. Mary Ball, however, will later say that she was never raped by anyone.
