Unitarian Rev. Potter Says Scopes Monkey Trail was Done for Publicity

Rev. Howard Gale Byrd

According to Rev. Dr. Charles Francis Potter of the West Side Unitarian Church, the Scopes Monkey Trial that was held last month in Dayton, Tennessee, was instigated solely for the sake of generating publicity for the town.

Rev. Potter also says that John Scopes is more of a Christian than any of those who have been involved with prosecuting them.

According to Potter:

"The trial did not start on the spur of the moment in Robinson's drug store. It started in Times Square. A young boy named George Rapleyea, who ran a news stand there, had to fight every day to hold his stand. It was the spirit of fight that was instilled in him in those days that made Dr. Rapleyea bring on this fight at Dayton.

I know that a thirst for publicity had much to do with bringing on the trial. And I know that the business interests of the town were backing it to their utmost, but the biggest factor was the tireless propaganda of Dr. Rapleyea."

Aside from looking for publicity, George Rapleyea also appears to have been motivated by a personal dislike for fundamentalist Christianity. Unfortunately, the forces of fundamentalist Christianity control the town:

"Something that no one seemed to appreciate was that Judge Raulston himself is a Fundamentalist minister, and that up to three weeks before the trial he conducted revival meetings at different points near Dayton."

Rev. Howard Gale Byrd, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Dayton, was forced to quit from his position when his congregation protested against his invitation to have Potter preach on the subject of evolution.
