Oscar Romero, future Archbishop of San Salvador, is born. Romero will be assassinated while celebrating Mass one day after he calls on soldiers of El Salvador to stop carrying out orders from the government to violate human rights and oppress the people.

Thirty people are killed by bombs and snipers during Archbishop Romero's funeral six days later.

Oscar Romero becomes a regular critic of the government, denouncing the ways in which it persecutes people, especially the poor. Investigations will conclude that Archbishop Romero is assassinated by an El Salvadoran death squad that had been trained and armed by the United States.
