L'Osservatore Romano, the official newspaper of the Vatican, publishes a harsh editorial condemning unnamed commentators who had the previous day suggested that Pope Pius X was suffering from a cold.

The truth is quite a bit worse: less than 24 hours later, Pius will be dead. The reflexive attitude at the Vatican to protect the public image of the pope and the Holy See, no matter what the truth is, becomes obvious to all.

Pope Pius X has been generally ill ever since he suffered a heart attack in 1913, and he fell into a serious illness on August 15.
